The Index Therapeuticus number (IT number) is specific to Switzerland and must be requested for each medicinal product during a new MAA application process. It is checked by Swissmedic as part of the review. Any change to the IT number must be reported to Swissmedic (in the same way as a change to the ATC code) using the Form Variations and extensions where the application category A.z. Other regulatory change is chosen.
In general, the IT number has lost importance in recent years, e.g. the allocation of Swissmedic applications to case managers is based on ATC codes. In many places, the IT number is being replaced by the international ATC code. Nevertheless, the IT number is still used in the Swiss healthcare system.
